Believe & Grow

Ted Lasso is a show about a soccer coach who was once a college football coach. He adapts his coaching to a new sport, and the show becomes a masterclass in leadership, optimism, and positivity.

Sometimes positivity can become toxic because it ignores the obstacles and brutal realities that may be holding you or your team back.

One thing we can learn from Ted's approach is a mindset shift.

It changes the narrative.

Instead of viewing obstacles as impossibilities, we start viewing them as opportunities to get better.

It's about reframing from, "This is so bad," to the refrain from the story of the Chinese farmer:

"Good. Bad. Maybe. We'll see."

Here's your challenge for the week:

Identify an obstacle you or your team is facing.

At your next meeting, pivot the conversation.

Ask your team:

"What's the opportunity for growth here?"

"How can we meet this challenge?"

Then make sure you celebrate one small win connected to that challenge.

The sign above the coach's door says "Believe."

It's about deciding to believe—in your team and in the process—and setting the tone with unwavering optimism without giving in to the pain brain that always predicts the worst.

Reach out.

We can help through one-on-one coaching, team trainings, books, and keynote presentations.
