How to Disarm Your Nervous System

Is it possible to disarm your nervous system?

It’s complicated.

Your nervous system is like a mousetrap. When armed, there is tension and energy. A mousetrap creates fear. At first, it appears there is no way to disarm it without getting your finger snapped and feeling pain.

The biggest hurdle is believing it can be done; and seeing a way. Accept that learning comes with fear, tension, and possible failure. That means you’re human and that you care. You will never solve it if you never try.

But you can disarm the trap: use your palm to release the hammer and your fingers to catch the tension and energy. Your nervous system is a little more complicated, but it can be done if you accept the difficulty and approach it with a determined and optimistic attitude.

There are endless tools you can use to master this. Disarming means diminishing the intensity so your reaction fits the circumstances. You don’t lower your emotional standards — it requires learning how to forgive yourself, be comfortable with the uncomfortable, reboot your brain, and use techniques like heart-focused breathing.
